Pledge Summary

The city of Durham situates just west of Raleigh, the capitol of North Carolina. Durham is home to over 200,000 residents and boast both a rich history and progressive future. Steve Schewel, Mayor of Durham, is excited to be working with the various teams and departments committed to keeping Durham and beautiful and thriving city. The city of Durham looks forward to implementing many of the practices put forth by the Mayor's Monarch Pledge.

Communications and Convening

  • Create a community-driven educational conservation strategy that focuses on and benefits local, underserved residents.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Earn or maintain recognition for being a wildlife-friendly city by participating in other wildlife and habitat conservation efforts (i.e., National Wildlife Federation’s Community Wildlife Habitat program).
  • Host or support a monarch neighborhood challenge to engage neighborhoods and homeowners' associations within the community to increase awareness, support community unity around a common mission, and/or create habitat for the monarch butterfly.
