Pledge Summary

The City of Kirksville is located in northeast Missouri with a population of over 17,500. On March 20, 2023 Mayor Zac Burden proclaimed April 2023 as Mayors' Monarch Pledge Month to demonstrate the City's commitment to creating habitat for the monarch and educating citizens about how they can make a difference. Residents are encouraged to plant native milkweed and nectar plants in locations where they live, work, learn, play and worship. The City will also investigate and identify locations in right of ways and city owned land where milkweed could be introduced.

Communications and Convening

  • Issue a Proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat.
  • Engage with gardening leaders and partners (e.g., Master Naturalists, Master Gardeners, Nature Centers, Native Plant Society Chapters , other long-standing and influential community leaders) to support monarch butterfly conservation.
  • Engage with city parks and recreation, public works, sustainability, and other relevant staff to identify opportunities to revise and maintain mowing programs and milkweed / native nectar plant planting programs.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Plant milkweed and pollinator-friendly native nectar plants in medians and public rights-of-way.
