Pledge Summary

The Borough of Sewickley is located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, approximately 11 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. Sewickley is a Native American word for "sweet water" and has a history that dates back to the mid 1700's, with the first written mention of Sewickley dated December 31, 1767. The Borough was incorporated in 1853 and has a population of approximately 3,931. Sewickley is 1 square mile and offers a wide variety of amenities as well as many community events throughout the year. Mayor Shannon has committed to saving the Monarch butterfly and other pollinators with the signing of the Mayors' Monarch Pledge and looks forward to engaging residents in building more pollinator habitats throughout the Borough.

Communications and Convening

  • Engage with community garden groups and urge them to plant native milkweeds and nectar-producing plants.
  • Engage with gardening leaders and partners (e.g., Master Naturalists, Master Gardeners, Nature Centers, Native Plant Society Chapters , other long-standing and influential community leaders) to support monarch butterfly conservation.
  • Issue a Proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Host or support a native seed or plant sale, giveaway or swap.
  • Facilitate or support a milkweed seed collection and propagation effort.

Systems Change

  • Direct city property managers to consider the use of native milkweed and nectar plants at city properties where possible.
