Pledge Summary

The City of Kirksville is located in northeast Missouri with a population of 17,500. Recently Mayor Zac Burden proclaimed March 21, 2022 as Mayors' Monarch Pledge Day to demonstrate the City's commitment to creating habitat for the monarch and educating citizens about how they can make a difference. Residents are encouraged to plant native milkweed and nectar plants in locations where they live, work, learn, play and worship. The City will also investigate and identify locations in city-owned land and right of way where native milkweed could be introduced.

  • Issue a Proclamation to raise awareness about the decline of the monarch butterfly and the species’ need for habitat.

Program and Demonstration Gardens

  • Plant milkweed and pollinator-friendly native nectar plants in medians and public rights-of-way.

  • Remove milkweed from the list of noxious plants in city weed / landscaping ordinances (if applicable).
