Final Frame: A Tiger Moth's Balancing Act

AFTER SPOTTING THIS TIGER MOTH walking across a table in her California home on an October afternoon, Carolyn Ross held out a copper spoon and the insect immediately perched on it. “I held it with my left hand and took its photo with my right hand,” she recalls. Ross then put the insect outside on a plant on her front porch. “The next morning the moth was gone,” she says. “It was an extraordinary encounter.”
