A photographer captures an image of two bear cubs sharing a tender sibling moment while mom was away

HUDDLED TOGETHER, two young brown bears wait patiently for their mother during late summer in Alaska’s Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. “I took this picture when the adult female had walked away and left her cubs right in front of me,” says Charles Gonzalez, who photographed the siblings from a safe distance. Brown bears typically are born in pairs in a winter den and stay with their mother for about two and a half years. The massive animals can live as long as 25 years in the wild.
