WHEN A FAT FLAKE OF SNOW splattered the beak of a northern cardinal at a feeder in Delmar, New York, Scott Stoner caught the priceless moment—but he didn’t even know it until he got home. “I was photographing birds through a building window,” recalls the lifelong birder and amateur nature photographer. “Later, when I was going through the photos on my computer, I saw this incredible snow burst. It was one of those one-in-a-million lucky shots.”
