The National Wildlife Federation (NWF), America’s largest wildlife conservation and education organization, is pleased to announce that its Ranger Rick and Ranger Rick Jr magazines, have both won the 2016 Parents’ Choice Gold Medal Award for editorial and design excellence in children’s content by the Parents’ Choice Foundation.
One of the top honors that can be reached in award levels by the Parents’ Choice Awards, the gold level is only given to recipients that prove to be the most appealing and highest quality in their specified genre. Criteria that judges’ assess include production standards, universal human values and unique, individual quality that push the product higher than others of its kind. Of all submissions sent to the Parents’ Choice Foundation, approximately 20 percent receive a commendation in one of the six award levels – a very small percentage of those are awarded the esteemed gold-level status.
“We’re thrilled to hear that we have won this distinction from the Parents’ Choice Foundation. Our team works diligently every day to provide young readers with material that is both educational and engaging,” said Mary Dalheim, editorial director for Ranger Rick and Ranger Rick Jr. “It is always a pleasant surprise and great honor to hear how others value the quality of our content and the importance of our mission.”
Founded in 1967, the magazine’s primary intention is to instill passion for nature and promote outdoor activity, while simultaneously inspiring a new generation of conservation stewards. The magazine provides regularly featured cartoon and fiction stories, environmental articles for the young reader, a number of recommended outdoor activities, and also educates readers on actions they can take to help preserve the natural world and its wildlife inhabitants.
The Parents’ Choice Awards Committees look for products that entertain and teach with flair, encourage imagination and inspire creativity. Products must show evidence of helping a child grow socially, intellectually, emotionally ethically and physically. In addition to contributing to the positive development of a child, the Committee looks for products that close the generation gap and allow parents and kids to connect in a fun, enlightening way. Learning value, play value, appeal and overall cost of the product also play a significant role in the judges’ decisions.
“We look forward to what the future has in store for Ranger Rick, Ranger Rick Jr., and its dedicated readers. We’ll continue to aim for only the best, top-notch quality content, and in return we hope to spark the next generation of conservation leaders,” said Dalheim.
