WASHINGTON, D.C. — New legislation from U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) to safeguard more than 4,700 miles of rivers, waterways and clean water in Oregon shows how common-sense and community-driven conservation solutions can create jobs and ensure the Pacific Northwest’s water, wildlife, and way of life.
“The rivers of the Northwest are essential for the region’s iconic fish and wildlife, clean water, outdoor recreation, and jobs. Senator Ron Wyden and Senator Jeff Merkley’s bill to ensure Oregon’s rivers endure for future generations underscores their commitment to conservation solutions that safeguard the region’s water, wildlife, and way of life,” said Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation. “We look forward to working with Senators Wyden and Merkley and the Northwest’s delegation to not only pass this common-sense bill, but also to work toward comprehensive conservation solutions that will support wildlife and economic growth for generations to come.”
“Declaring Oregon's rivers and streams as Wild and Scenic not only preserves pristine riparian habitat and spawning grounds, but helps preserve our Northwest fishing heritage and the vast economy that angling supports,” said Chris Hager, executive director of the Association of Northwest Steelheaders. “This is the leadership Oregon needs if we want to recover critically listed salmon and steelhead throughout our state.”
