Sign FAQs

Putting a sign in your garden can help communicate the actions you are taking in your yard and the benefits behind it. Just this simple act can create change in your neighborhood.

Studies show that people are more likely to take new conservation action if they see other people doing it. In fact, this "social comparison" was more effective in changing people’s behavior than education or even monetary incentives!

Plus, signs are a great cue of care, which showcase to your neighbors that you care about and intentionally maintain your garden using science-backed practices. Learn more about using cues of care in your garden here!

Yes, our signs proclaim that your property is a Certified Wildlife Habitat®, so you must have the property certified with the National Wildlife Federation in order to purchase and feature a sign.

You can purchase as many signs as you want, so long as they are being used on a site that is certified as a Certified Wildlife Habitat®.

You can replace old Certified Wildlife Habitat signs by purchasing a new one in our shop here!

Yes, these signs are designed to go outside and to withstand the environment for many years to come. However, certain chemicals, solvents, and salts, like deposits from road salts, can harm the finish and cause wear and tear over years. In addition, over many years sunlight can cause some fading, particularly when the sign is placed in direct sunlight.

To preserve the longevity of your sign, we recommend you wipe it off regularly using a soft cloth and warm water.

Roughly 30 state affiliate organizations are official partners in the Certified Wildlife Habitat program. This means that residents in these states who get their garden certified are automatically co-certified with both the National Wildlife Federation and the state affiliate organization! These certifiers can also then purchase a special version of the classic sign that features both organizations' logos to recognize their habitat at both a national and state level.

Plus, when you certify your property in one of these select states, a portion of the certification fee goes to support conservation in your state! You can learn more about these state affiliates here.

First, please double check your email receipt and make sure that you purchased a sign with your certification. While certifying your garden allows you the ability to purchase a sign, signs are not automatically included with every certification. Instead, you need to choose a signage bundle option on step three of the online certification application.

If your email receipt indicates that you purchased a sign, please know that signs are shipped separately from your Certified Wildlife Habitat certificate. You can expect your sign to arrive within a few weeks after purchase. If you still have not received it, please reach out to us!
