Enter the YRE Competition

group of students in greenhouse In the United States, youth between the ages of 11 and 25 are invited to participate in the national Young Reporters for the Environment competition!

Participants investigate an environmental issue and report on it using journalistic techniques in either writing, photography, or videography. Entries must be relevant to participants’ local community, connect to a global perspective, include possible solutions, and be disseminated to an appropriate target audience.

Participation Requirements

Participants enter in one of five age categories: 11-13, 14-16, 17-19, 20-22, and 23-25. The age category is determined by the participant's age on the day the entry is submitted to the national competition. Submissions may be authored by an individual student or a group of students working together (maximum of 4 students per group). In the event that students working together on a group project fall into both age categories, the entry will be judged in the elder category. Participants may submit more than one piece to the competition. Any student under the age of 13 (whether participating as an individual or as part of a group) must submit a parental/legal guardian consent form before submitting an entry.

Submissions are no longer being accepted for the 2019 competition.

The national jury will select winners in each age bracket for each media type. Honors will be given for first, second, and third prize in each category. The jury has the option not to give an award if no submission is found to be deserving, and to give more than one award in the case of multiple exceptional entries.

First-place winners in each category will continue to the international competition.
